Ask for the behaviors you want.
Whether you run a small or large company, creating an engaged, high-performing culture is critical. It's easier said than done, but here are the four things every company can do.
Ask for the behaviors you want.
Empower your team by asking for the specific behaviors, competencies, or values you want them to demonstrate. Avoid using words like “No’ or “Don’t”. Clearly communicate these and let them know what you expect.
Make it relatable.
How is this universally applied, regardless of role or rank? What does this look like in action? Give your people concrete examples of done well, done poorly, or missing entirely. Most importantly, use plain language instead of HR jargon.
Make it meaningful.
How does this help the organization or impact results? How does it connect to the mission or vision? Demonstrate how these behaviors benefit the organization and contribute to its mission or vision. Help each person see their connection to the organization's success.
What’s in it for them?
Consider how your employees will benefit. This could include rewards, recognition, growth opportunities, or creating a positive work environment.
